Hyperspace Monitoring Station
By installing a monitoring station with the necessary scanning arrays as a upgrade on a fleet zone your zone has increased Scanning range of +1 (:hex).

This special project applies the Hyperspace Monitoring Station upgrade on a fleet zone which increases its Scanning range with +1 (:hex).

Cost: 1000 (:tax) + 200 (:holonet-relays)
Prerequisites: Passive Hyperspace Monitoring

Interesting idea. Two questions:
Why do you want this tech?
And how did you calculate the cost?

Because normally you can only see what happens in your own system.
I guesstimated it to be: the cost of a zone upgrade + half the relay nodes for a scanning fleet.

I think it needs to be a bit more expensive because it allows you to see what's going on 7 (:hex) instead of just 1.

The costs seem to be on the low side, this technology allows you to collapse the functionality of a scanning fleet (and associated costs such as the required Open Market zone support) into an already existing zone. This is a very nice discount. Based on the guidelines for return-on-investment, the cost should be higher than a normal scanning fleet (minus the scanning for sites capability's cost), as you basically safe yourself the construction of a Open Market Zone and a Scanning fleet.

I think that the whole scanning thing shouldn't be too cheap overall anyway, because it takes a lot of opportunity for storylines (and also: space is enormous.. scanning is not a very cheap thing).

Take into account the fact that the Survey fleet can actually move around, and in that way be outside of a systems influence of Hyperspace while doing their Passive Hyperspace Monitoring... This isn't just about getting higher statistics, it's also about what sounds feasible -- even though it is a science fiction setting ;)

In that case the monitoring station is probably build on top of the Holonet relay station that is located outside of the systems influence. This would mean that the station would be more expensive since it does not cost a zone or upgrade of it but it would maybe be more fitting.

Some pro's and cons that I could think of that influence the price.

Pro's
6 squares extra scanning range
No open market slot
Only requires holonet relay station

Con's
Not mobile
Requires the Passive hyperspace monitoring technology
Technology + Special project (high cost for each implementation)

I have discussed the ideas with Elmer and came to 2 possible solutions:

  • +1 scanning on your system using a combination of a holonet relay station upgrade and a fleet zone upgrade where the data is processed.
  • Scanning stations that cost about 1/3 of a scanning fleet and scan 1 (:hex)

New Proposals:

Technology:
Stationary Hyperspace Monitoring Installations
After increasing the power input of a monitoring installation, extremely sensitive scanning technology and extensive calibration it is possible to monitor vast amounts of space from a stationary location.

This technology allows for the construction of Hyperspace Monitoring Station & Hyperspace Monitoring Grid.

Cost: 1500 (:tax) + 3 (:turns)
Prerequisites: Passive Hyperspace Monitoring

Project:
Hyperspace Monitoring Station
By installing a monitoring station as a upgrade on a fleet zone with the necessary scanning arrays as a upgrade on a existing holonet relay station in the same sector your faction is capable of monitoring the surrounding (:hex).

This special project applies the Hyperspace Monitoring Station upgrade on a fleet zone and improves a holonet relay station in the same sector with a scanning array which increases the scanning range of the sector with +1 (:hex).

Cost: 500 (:tax) + 400 (:holonet-relays)
Prerequisites: Stationary Hyperspace Monitoring Installations

Alternative:
Hyperspace Monitoring Grid
By installing a grid of multiple small scanning stations in a sector your faction is capable of monitoring the activity in the sector.

This special project creates a hyperspace monitoring grid in a sector providing your faction with Scanning in the (:hex).

Cost: 250 (:tax) + 200 (:holonet-relays)
Prerequisites: Stationary Hyperspace Monitoring Installations

Based on the survey fleet revamp a new proposal with calculations.
Every special product used is valuated at 4.5 (:tax) and every product at 0.75 (:tax).

Scanning fleet: 100 (:mtcf) + 400 (:holo-trade) = 2250 (:tax)
Passive Hyperspace monitoring share = 2000 (:tax) / 4 = 500 (:tax)
Scanning fleet upgrade: (500 (:tax), 200 (:ict-technology), 150 (:hyperspace-nodes) = 1325 (:tax)
Upkeep cost for active scanning of surrounding 6 sectors ; 52 * 30 (:tax) = 1560 (:tax)
Open market fleet slot = 1500 (:tax)

Total military scanning fleet cost over 1 year = 7135 (:tax)

The current proposal uses a stationary military scanning grid in 1 sector.

Cost per Grid (:hex) should be about 7135 / 6 ~ 1200 (:tax)

The pricing seems logical, though as this is an advanced yet reduced version of the Survey Fleet scanning -- it is better because it will be cheaper, and it is worse because it can't move -- I think that the research might be a little more expensive: 2000 (:tax) / 4 (:turns) for example.

First I thought why not looking at the cost of using non-upgraded fleets as well, after a quick calculation I saw that it is way to expensive to scan 3 zones with 3 fleets.

Now the cost in tax for 1 zone scanning = 2000 (:tax) with this tech and 3750 (:tax) for a scanning fleet. I agree with Brend, the tech can be 2000 (:tax). Then it is still cheaper but not nearly 2 times cheaper. :)

Overall the tech and its use is looking good.

For the Union it would cost 10 000 (:tax) to have all the empty (:hex) around the bozzy spines scanned. Tech not included.

I will change the Technology to 2000 (:tax) and 4 (:turns). If there are no objections I will but it on the wiki in a couple of days.

I don't object - this is basically what Brend asked for.
