[ Jedi Temple ] Denari Merelle's Training Mission
"You can follow him if you like, I will follow the greasy tracks, let's stay in contact by radio. You have one with you?" Jaicen was prepared to go alone, although he wasn't much of a tracker, greasy mud would be easy to follow.
Not too long ago, Denari would have chosen to follow the guy, just for the hell of it, but since then she decided to take her training more seriously.
She remembered this, sighed and shook her head.
"If you are confident he is no threat then there's not much point in 'following him anyways', now is there?" Denari responded.
"Let's go" she said and with that she went back to following the greasy track at her initial pace, hoody still covering her hair and obscuring part of her face.

The hunter shrugged and went about his business, leaving the two Jedi to follow the greasy tracks. Denari's skill at tracking made it easy, even the parts where the tracks were obscured.
Eventually, they managed to follow the tracks down to another freight elevator which led into a large and mostly unused basement garage underneath the temple. At the entrance to the garage, Salia was pushing a large, greasy barrel along the ground towards a stack of other, similar barrels. She stopped immediately upon seeing Denari and Jaicen and positioned herself in front of the barrel as if to hide the huge barrel behind her tiny form.
"Hi! I'm not doing anything suspicious, why are you even thinking I would?!" she accused, giving a stern look "You can't just go around accusing innocent people of things!"

Having had a fair share of fun pulling pranks herself, Denari wasn't planning on interfering with whatever Salia was scheming.
Instead, she opted to simply ignore the entire suspicious part of Salia's behaviour and ask her if she had seen anything.
"Hey Salia! Did you happen to see Jedi Master Screetor leave training room 3? Or see someone put up a cardboard cut-out of him there?"
If Salia denies having been there or starts denying it, Denari interrupts:
"Do you know who rolled this greasy barrel past there then? I'm kinda curious how I'm supposed to proceed with my training mission with the Jedi Master leaving without saying a word or leaving a message... I hope that person knows something about it. Also the greasy track this barrel leaves passes by there, so I'm sure its been there" She finishes with a wink.
Denari doesn't think Salia would hide anything she should know about, so she doesn't sound as if she's accusing Salia of anything.
She is convinced that if Salia knows something she should know, she'd tell.

"Master Screetor?" Salia looked around, then shook her head "No, I haven't seen..."
Denari interrupted, and Salia seemed to want to try to come up with some sort of answer, but instead of words, a loud roar, similar to a herd of angry elephants trying to out-roar the engine of a jet-plane, could be heard instead.
After the roar, things went silent for a moment, but before anyone could ask, Salia had an answer
"That was my stomach, you see, I'm really hungry and these barrels contain meat, so that's because I'm really hungry, its not because I'm hiding anything!"
Unless Salia's stomach was located inside the garage and was capable of screaming like a herd of angry elephants, that just plainly wasn't true.

As Denari's ears were somewhat sensitive, she quickly covered them with her hands as soon as the roaring started. One arm somewhat awkwardly folded around Spades, who was sitting on her shoulder and seemed to be just as startled, making herself small and suspiciously eyeing her surroundings.
After Salia's explanation, Denari remained silent for a moment, trying to suppress an ear to ear smile appearing on her face. Obviously that was no Twi'lek stomach. It was more likely the sound of some animals she had not seen before.
"Well... That's an amazing stomach you have there Salia." Denari managed to say.
She then takes a deep breath to calm herself and uses the force to see how many and what kind of animals there might be and where they are.

Jaicen had been silent for a few minutes while the conversation was going on, but after the sound Salia made TG-100 and Jaicen just walked slowly over to the barrel, shoved Salia aside, and opened the barrel on its top side. If Salia tried to resist TG-100 just grabbed her, or pushed her away from the barrel, putting TG-100 between her and the barrel.
((Check: 8 = 5 Force Level + 3 Strength -- Pushing Salia out of the way and opening the barrel.))

Denari concentrated on seeing a force signature and after focussing for a while, she felt a presence in the Force, further back in the hangar.
Meanwhile, TG-100 was easily able to move the feather-weight Twi'lek girl aside and open the barrel. Much to his surprise, the barrel contained exactly what Salia had said it would - it was full of meat, enough to feed a small army, and its strong scent immediately spread - it was pork of some sort.
Almost immediately, Denari felt the force presence make its way towards them, attracted by the scent of the meat in the container, but before she could warn anyone, the creature already revealed itself.
The creature was some five meters tall, with long arms and an immense jaw, its hide heavily armoured. It was safe to say this creature was potentially dangerous - not to mention hungry, from the way it roared like a herd of angry elephants! With speed, it made its way towards TG-100!

Jaicen reacted quickly to the evolving situation. TG-100 kicked the barrel on its side so that the pork would fall out. "Salia, get out." Said TG-100 with his standard monotonous voice. If Salia reacted to TG-100, It skipped 10 meters behind the barrel, grabbing his lightsaber from his belt: Ready to activate it if the creature decided to attack TG-100 or Salia. If Salia didn't react TG-100 grabbed the girl and ran away, putting her down 50m further, hoping Denari could handle the creature for a few seconds.
Shocked and indignated by Jaicen's man-handling of Salia, she was stunned for a moment, so she couldn't warn anyone.
As Jaicen was kicking over the barrel she shouted :"Jaicen! Get away from the barrel! It just needs to eat!" as loud as she could, while she moved to Salia to help her on her feet- and get her out of the way of the animal- as gently as she could.
"Is that a friend of yours?" she asks Salia softly, but loud enough to be heard over the roaring animal.
Meanwhile she keeps an eye out for the actions of the animal and Jaicen.

((OOC: Note, TG-100 is not manhandling Salia, just making sure TG-100 can reach the barrel and pushing salia out of the way, picking her up and putting her down somewhere else.))
The barrel came crashing down, spilling meat everywhere and drawing the creature in closer. Denari and TG-100 managed to manouvre Salia away from the food source, and get themselves to safety as well.
From their new position they could observe as the creature started stuffing meat down its giant maw indiscriminitely.
Salia looked a little bit caught with her hand in the cookiejar, but there was no avoiding it now.
"That's Ranny." she finally explained "He ran away from home because he worried that his life was in a rut, and now that his children are out of the house he wants to follow his dream to explore the world before he is too old to be able to manage, but his family wants to put him in a home for the elderly so they can get access to his inheritance, so they sent these nasty bounty hunters after him to bring him in before he can see the world, and now he's hiding here so he can lay low for a while until he gets a chance to make his escape and catch a transport and I'm helping him hide so he can go hiking in the tranquil oasis of Serina on Stellaria, and swim by the white beaches on the archipellago of Samudra Tata on Mirda and see the aurora's over the Excarian city of Dellavori!"
It seemed unlikely that a Rancor, a semi-sentient reptilian creature with the rough intellect of a crocodile, had had such a complicated train of thought, let alone that he had communicated that to Salia.

'So that is a Rancor. It's a tad more impressive than in the pictures...' Denari thought, not entirely happy to be this close to a predator that is over three times her size and known to be very dangerous.
When Salia finished explaining, she looked from the Rancor to Salia, back to the Rancor and then to Salia again. Not knowing exactly how much of the story Salia filled in herself, she decided to leave the explanation for what it was and see what she could get out of the Rancor herself.
Despite her instincts she moves a little closer to Ranny, making sure to position herself between it and Salia and Jaicen, while staying out of reach if possible. She motions them to not make a lot of noise and to not come any closer.
She focuses on the Rancor to connect with it's mind with friendly intent. She tries to convey a desire to help and to gain the animal's thrust, while getting a measure for how intelligent it really is and how well they might be able to communicate.
Spades does not really approve of the action, and quietly takes off from Denari's shoulder to find a sitting spot further away from the Rancor. For some reason a Twi'lek head seems very appropriate and appealing to her, but if trying to land on Salia results in protests she swiftly moves to a structure on the ceiling to sit on or hang from instead.

Using her knowledge of the Force, Denari was able to establish a connection of sorts with the Rancor. The creature was indeed semi-sentient, with an intelligence on the level of an animal, perhaps a dog or a cat, Denari determined.
With her power to befriend animals, she managed to calm the creature down, ensuring it wouldn't attack, especially now that a much better foodsource was available, which it munched down on. With it calm and fed, she was able to approach closer, perhaps even pet the beast.
Meanwhile, Spades took a seat on Salia's head, who didn't seem to mind, seeming to naturally trust the bird.
"See, Ranny is nice..." Salia noted "He shouldn't be hunted..."

"Nothing should be hunted if it isn't necessary for survival... Why Jedi Master Screetor would allow it is beyond me..." Denari mumbled softly, mainly to herself, while her main focus was on the Rancor.
As she moved closer she slowly lifted her hand to try and touch Ranny. At the first sign of that not being OK, she would slowly pull back her hand.
"Hey big one, how did you get here? Where do you want to go?" she asked while she tried to convey the intent to know this, and receive something like a reply, via her connection to the Rancor. She wasn't expecting a detailed story, but animals like Spades, and even cats and dogs, usually managed to make clear what they wanted to eat, or where they wanted to go or play, this way. Communication with her sentient companions seemed more difficult than that, so she supposed trying the Rancor couldn't hurt.

"Because the creature might hurt other creatures." Jaicen replied "And thus cause more hurt than Rancy will be hurt when he is being hunted. I think Screetor will be more than capable to care for the creature."
"I will call the front-office that we found the Rancor, since he can't stay here."

((OOC: I assume that my character manages to respond to Jaicen in between the mumbling and reaching the Rancor. Otherwise she might not have an opportunity to react to Jaicen in time to avoid potential unpleasantness))
Despite her focus on the Rancor, the words 'call the front-office' got through to her and it dawned on her what Jaicen just said. Realising in how many ways that could escalate, she admitted to herself she needed to communicate her plan as well, before getting closer to the Rancor.
"Hold that thought." she said, somewhat turning towards Jaicen so she could look at him directly. "I'll establish a firm bond with the Rancor first, so it stays calm and doesn't need to be hurt. Then we can discuss about who to inform and how. It hasn't done harm in the time someone needed to get all those barrels here, so a few more minutes won't hurt either."
With that, she turned all her attention back to the Rancor to get a feel for what it wants.

Jaicen responded with a slow metallic voice via TG-100
"A, that is what you are trying to do. I didn't quite understand what you were doin'. Okay, I will wait." He then took a step back and said to Salia:
"Salia, could you come here, Denari is trying to talk to Rancy and she would like to be alone, and to see if Rancy is okay."

Mercury - Storyteller
Denari quietly attempted to connect with the Rancor, asking it how it got here, or where it wanted to go. Right now, it was reasonably clear what the creature's motivations were: there was food in those barrels and it wanted to eat said food, that much was easy to determine.
Meanwhile, as Jaicen agreed to wait, taking Salia with him to make some distance so Denari could be (somewhat) alone with the creature.
Focussing back on the Rancor, Denari carefully established a deeper bond with the creature, attempting to gauge its deeper motivations - the ones that went beyond the here and now.
She was able to determine that the Rancor had come from a confined place where it had lacked freedom, though beyond that it had been treated well there - more than enough food anyway. It seemed that food was a major motivator for the creature.
However the Rancor also had a hunting instinct - despite not actually having any hunting experience - and with no actual prey in its home, when an opportunity came to escape, it had gone to find it elsewhere. She sensed the mix of fear and excitement exploring new surroundings.
With no hunting experience, the Rancor had wandered unable to actually kill anything, until it came here where there had been food. Food was good and the white creature seemed to be able to make food appear.
This was the extent of what Denari was able to determine by connecting with the creature, though she was also able to make sure it would stay calm. So long as nobody threatened to take away its food and it perceived no major threats, the situation was stable.

Having learned what she wanted to know, Denari backed off from the Rancor and calmly walked back to her companions.
"So, I had a chat with Ranny and I have good news." She announced with a smile on her face. "As long as no one takes away it's food or threatens to harm it, it won't be a threat to anyone or anything. So the situation is stable."
Her expression went from smiling to matter-of-factly as she proceeded to inform Jaicen and Salia of what she had learned.
"A neglected hunting instinct prompted it to escape when the opportunity presented itself. Since it never learned to hunt, it wandered around, unable to catch food for itself. It found food here and the environment is new, so it's happy."
"He didn't say anything about his family though..." she added for Salia.
"Before escaping, however, it was confined somewhere, but treated well, so I expect it used to live in a zoo or something."
"Do you know if there is something like a zoo in this city? One that is allowed to keep Rancors?"
She looked at Salia and Jaicen expectantly, hoping they would know, so they wouldn't need to spend time on actually looking it up.

"Huh, but a Wookie is a..." Denari started, "Wait... UCZG?" Finally a bell started to ring it seemed.
"Does the ZG stand for Zoological Garden or something? Then it makes more sense why Jedi Master Screetor would allow that hunter here..."
She eyed Jaicen for a fraction of a moment, but decided to address his not answering her question back in the hallways later. Perhaps he was unable to receive telepathic messages, or had to ignore it due to some moral objections to that form of communication. However, now was not the time to find out.
"I suppose we better call them indeed. Ranny won't be able to survive on it's own and they can probably change it's shelter to provide more excitement and satisfy it's hunting instinct. If they can't, we'll have to find a place that can together with them, otherwise it will be unhealthy for Ranny and he might escape again."
"Any additions or objections?" She asked, while she reached for her communicator to ask the front office to connect her to the UCZG.
((OOC: I'll give Jaicen the chance to respond, interfere or add anything until next week Thursday. After that I'll post the actual action.))

Jaicen was a bit weirded out by the whole situation, but followed Denari's advice, she was clearly better with creatures than he was. Especially knowing his last time in nature.
"Allright, I will call them, that sounds like a good idea, you keep keeping that beast happy" Jaicen responded and he also picked up his communicator and called the Zoo: "Dear Sir, we found your rancor."
"Allright, I will call them, that sounds like a good idea, you keep keeping that beast happy" Jaicen responded and he also picked up his communicator and called the Zoo: "Dear Sir, we found your rancor."
"It is happy. That won't need effort from my part, as long as no one does anything stupid. I think it is better if I-" 'call instead' was what she wanted to say, but Jaicen beat her to it. Apparently, not asking him to do it explicitly, and already having her own communicator in hand, was not enough of a hint to the weird human to understand she wanted to call instead.
Flabbergasted by Jaicen's choice of message- gender assumption, no identification, no context, assumption it is indeed theirs-, Denari decided that Jaicen was definitely incapable of properly communicating the situation on his own. As the damage was already done however, she decided to wait for the initial response of the person on the other side of the connection.
As fast as she could, she moved into position to both be able to hear the response and be able to take Jaicen's communicator from him, if needed, while saying: "Let me listen in on this. You're communicatively incompetent."
It seemed she was now really starting to lose her patience with Jaicen.

This probably involves balancing on TG-100 and perhaps bending uncomfortably around it, as Denari is petite and Jaicen's head and communicator should be somewhere near the combat droids head (if Jaicen is to be able to see in front of them while strapped to the Droid's back).))
