Trigiel looked at Darones with hanging headflaps: "Darones... You thought of investigating the source of radiation and not bring a radiation suit... I am a little disappointed. Going there and back again and back to the temple would costs us twelve hours. We don't have the time for this. Let the force guide us to our destination and return the guides to safety. You take my suit."

Trigiel turned to the guides for a quick consultation: "I think it is best if we go on alone. The radiation levels are becoming to high to travel without proper protection. Are you aware of anything special we need to keep in mind? Or can we simply follow the green light?

Actually now I think of it: How well will the Taun Tauns handle radiation?"

"I realise that, and you are right." Darones said while putting on the suit Trigiel handed him.

"Though we can scarce go back now, I simply didn't expect this much radiation. As for the Taun Tauns, we'd probable be faster if we took them with us, though the radiation might not be good for them either. And since they aren't ours, we should probably leave them with the scouts."

The scouts look at the tauntauns for a moment, before simply stating: "The tauntauns are much heavier, and sturdier than people, and can take a lot more. But if you can, please do not take them all the way to the temple. Let them rest behind a hill and walk the last part, that way they are protected from the worst and can rest a bit before we ride back."

The other scout looked at what little terrain could be seen before replying to the question of how to find the temple.

"The path to the temple should be simple, follow this ridge until you come to a really big boulder, then head left and follow the dried riverbed uphill until you are at the temple. Good luck, Jedi!"

((OOC: You'll be riding the final part of the journey without scouts, so you'll need to make one final check to navigate to the temple, and to find a good place to let the tauntauns rest.))

"Thank you, we will heed your advice. We will see you soon."

"Padawan, are you ready?"

When Darones is ready, Trigiel sets for the temple by following the ridge until the 'really big boulder'. He uses the green pillar of light as compass to determine if any big boulder they pass might be the correct one.

If they get near the temple, he looks for a decent shelter for the Taun Tauns before walking the final part.

"Thank you for your help and advice so far." Darones said the scouts as they were gearing up to leave.

((OOC: Your checks are on the low side. They are Approved, but only provide a partial success.))

The two jedi make their way through the terrain doing their best to navigate based on the instructions by the scouts and their own insights. Finding the really big boulder was not difficult, but following the dried riverbed was. The Jedi did not really have an idea of what to look for to spot the dry riverbed, and once or twice they had to backtrack to regain their bearings. Using the green pillar of light as a beacon helped somewhat.

Eventually, they arrived near the temple. They did find some boulders for the tauntauns to settle down behind, providing meagre shelter from the elements — not great, but they could not find better at the moment.

Walking the rest of the distance, the Jedi felt the winds getting stronger and less predictable. As they neared the site of the temple, the storm becomes cast in a green light, as if the green pillar was trying to outshine all other sources of light. Stepping over the last ridge, the two Jedi saw the temple!

Or at least... What was left of it.

The temple itself was reduced to rubble. Four pitiful columns of stone were still standing on their base, and they could make out several parts of a roof scattered about, and the ground surrounding the temple is marked with a complex pattern of scorchmarks that seem more delicate than expected. The massive column of light burst from the ground in the middle of the temple, from a hole at least 20 meters in diameter. While the column was not unlike fire their were no actual flames, it seems to be more of a continuous dischrage of energy into the atmosphere, reaching up deep into the storm — as far as the Jedi could see, the column reached into the sky without end.

After their eyes adjusted to the brightness of the column of green "fire", they could see that the rest of temple was strewn on the hillside, with some parts driven into the ground with great force, as if by an explosion. The temple grounds were cast almost exclusively in a green light, all objects casting unclear shadows due to the column's width. The column of energy was clearly thinner than the hole in the ground, so in theory it would be possible to walk up to the edge and peer down... Another venue of investigation would be the altar, or what seems to be an altar: a massive block of hewn stone sticking into the ground at an odd angle some 50 meters away from the temple, probably dislodged by the explosions that destroyed the temple.

As the Jedi contemplated how and what to investigate, both their radiation scanners were sounding off alarms. Checking their equipment, it appears that several radiation safety-levels were being surpassed. They would have to work fast, and investigate quickly. The warnings were severe: more than an hour at this level of radiation would be cause for hospitalisation, more than two hours would kill a normal individual.

((OOC: So, the time limit thing is going to work as follows: You each get to make two significant investigation/action checks. If you stay and continue after these two checks, there will be severe health risks. Furthermore, I would like to keep the pace up, so I aim for one "round" of investigations per week.

Simply observations such as looking around for something big (i.e., looking for a large part of the roof, or searching the rubble for a large pink elephant), or talking to each other for a while are fine. But investigating or collection scientific evidence (i.e., walking up the edge of the hole and taking images, or looking at the rubble for clues, etc.) will count as a "signicicant investigation".

When in doubt, do not hesitate to ask/PM me I will do my best to respond as soon as humanly possible to keep things going.

You are currently at Darones: 0 / 2 investigations, Trigiel: 0 / 2 investigations))

Coming up to the site of the now ruined temple, Darones was surprised at the site's destruction and the actual origin of the green 'fire' that seemed to come from inside the planet. Though he wasn't sure whether or not it would matter as much given the obvious current state of the temple grounds, Darones still took a moment to pay his respects to the Gods and customs of the Tunuaranan as to not offend the Gods before wandering the temple grounds.

"Well," Darones said after looking around a bit, "I think we can rule out attack from the outside, given it seems to me that temple has exploded outward. So.. perhaps someone activated some sort of device or explosion or.. was this caused something coming from with the planet core and just happened to pierce through the crust at the site of the temple."

Taking heed of the radiation scanners warnings about dangerous levels, Darones then continued:

"Given that our time here is limited, I recon its best that we split up so that we can cover more ground, though not yet sure were to begin... Any ideas?"

Upon reaching the temple, Trigiel paid his respects to the Temple as well, if it only were to respect the Tunuaranan people.

"Well, I didn't suspect the core of the planet to be a haywire fusion reactor, but by the looks of it...

Padawan, we have the strange scorch marks, the pillar of green light and the matter of how it all exploded. I will will investigate the green light first, can you investigate the scorch marks or look around for more points of interest?"

If Darones does not object, Trigiel carefully walks towards the hole in the ground, making sure not to mess up anything looking important like the scorch marks or anything else. The last meters, Trigiel let himself drop on his belly and crawls towards the edge, scanning the radiation levels. His expectation is that there will be even more radiation emerging from the hole. By crawling he hopes to protects his organs from most of it while he peeks with his cyborg eye into the hole. If it safe enough (given the circumstances) he peeks down the hole.

((Check: 15 = 7 Force Level + 6 Vision + 2 Force Vision -- sensitive optics (infra red, ultra violet, night sight zoom function), looking into the hole where the green light emerges.))

((OOC: At this point, I like to point out that Trigiel should be able to loose his cyborg eye and continue with his inferior back-up system as noted on the fecta page, if the consequences of his action are severe. He would have penalties for the rest of the mission of course.))

"Yes Master," Darones replied to Trigiel's suggestion " I'll try if I can make sense of the pattern of the scorch marks, they seem a little off to be just a random result of the explosion."

Darones then took a piece of paper and started to make a crude pattern based up to the places where he found scorch marks and their relative position from the Green pillar, using the four stone pillars that had once carried the roof of the temple as points of reference. He also took some time study the scorch marks themselves for differences in size, colour, radio-activity and if possible chemical make up.

((Check: 12 = 7 Force Level + 5 Reason -- Studying the pattern of the scorch marks to see if they can point to a cause possible source of the explosion based on their relative distance to each other and the center of temple.))

((OOC: Trigiel's check: Approved.

Darones' check: Given that we have a well-established Explosives skill skill, and you are investigating an explosion by looking at debris, chemical make-up, etc., I am ruling that this is an untrained check. As per Taking Checks untrained use of a skill halves your Force Level. This brings your final result to 8 (= 3 + 5): Approved.))

Darones starts charting the debris and the scorch marks, making a quick map of the situation. He makes sure to note down coloration and radioactivity for each mark and slowly works his way through the debris in this manner.

Meanwhile, Trigiel carefully approaches the large hole in the ground. His expectation fo increased radiotion being confirmed, he drops down to a crawl for the final meters. He slowly peers over the edge. As he peers down, he sees layers of earth and stone. The illumination from the beam lighting the walls of the hole, and his Force Vision allow him to spot that the walls of the hole appear artificial about a hundred meters down. The dirt and stone make way for a metal of some kind. There is writing on the metal, in the form of relief, some kind of glyphs.

His technologically enhanced vision allows him to zoom in on the details. He recognizes partial glyphs, but he doesn't know where he recognizes them from. Unfortunately he is not allowed much time to think, as several internal alarms are warning him of radiation overload in the head-segment of his body. As he pulls back his head to prevent the overload an arc of green energy shoots of from the beam and into his head, the circuitry driving his main visual and audio sensor fries out immediately due to overload.

As he rolls away from the hole, he does so in utter blackness and silence. The alarms go silent as well, as the radiation drops to acceptable levels again — clearly, he is now away from the hole. As his cyborg body activates backup sensors, he remembers where he saw glyphs like these before: during his Knight's trial, in the ancient tomb on Ord Isil, where someone had made most glyphs unreadable with lightsaber swipes.

Darones was pondering the pattern of scorch marks. The marks themselves were too delicate to be made by a simple explosion. Yet, the pattern was one of an explosion. An explosion coming from inside the temple, about where the hole now is. As he ponders the problem, he notices that there are two types of scorch marks. Explosion marks and, for lack of a better word, "decorative" marks. As he ponders the problem he suddenly sees an arc of green light arc out of the beam, and hitting Trigiel in the head. As Trigiel rolls away, clearly conscious and active, the arc trails back over the ground, leaving a small but distinct "decorative" mark.

It is clear now: the explosion came from the inside, and whatever kind of radiation hit the chunks of debris acted as a conduit of sorts to the green energy, allowing the energy to arc to the debris. Then, after the discharge, the arc diminished and "walked" back to the hole. Most likely there is some kind of ionisation process at work.

((OOC: @Trigiel: You will suffer a -2 to Vision until the end of the mission. (That is, until your main sensors can be repaired at a sufficiently advanced cybernatics workshop; which is located in the Union.)

You have now taken 1 of 2 investigations each.

My missions always seem to run on for too long. I would strongly prefer to round off this mission after the analysis cycles. That way, the Jedi will have made tangible progress — they know more about the going-ons here — without running the mission for much longer.

A follow-up missions will come into being eventually. After I have had a long hard think on how to structure my missions to be shorter and quicker.))

Darones walked to towards Trigiel to see if he was alright but before he could get to him the cyborg had already gotten back on his feet. It was a little difficult to make out precisely what he meant to say though, but his actions were clear enough. They would speak more later.

With Trigiel studying the energy beam itself this time, Darones turned his attention to altar, some 50 meters away from the temple. Given his earlier findings Darones concluded that for the Altar to be expelled outward, the source of the explosion either had to be inside the Altar, or directly underneat.

((OOC: Both checks are approved.))

Trigiel starts taking measurements of the beam, using both the cybernetic sensors still available to him as well as his radiation scanner. With this trove of information, he is sure to be able to learn more about the beam later on.

Meanwhile, Darones walks to the altar. As he does so, he notices that some of the "decorative" scorch marks seem to come from secondary discharges, instead of directly from the larger explosion. I appears that the charge can somehow be carried by certain objects, and discharged later. As he studies the scorch marks on the altar, he refines his earlier conclusion about the explosion. I was clear now that there was an energy build-up first, and that the explosion followed.

The altar itself has an intricate pattern of inlaid metal lanes on it, not unlike the Obelisk the two Jedi studied in the village. After studying the smaller scorch marks, Darones concludes that the energy build-up almost certainly took place inside the altar. When too much energy was being led into the altar, a massive cascade discharge occurred. It is not clear to him yet how this discharge would lead to the energy beam being emitted, but the two are clearly related.

While the two Jedi are working, their radiation scanners started to give off a warning sound. This was not unexpected, as they already knew that the radiation levels here were a bit too high for a longer study of the situation.

((OOC: You have now both finished your second investigation. As explained earlier: if you stay and continue after these two rounds, there will be severe health risks.))

"I quite agree," Darones nodded, "We've been here long enough. Besides there isn't much left do now."

Not really, Darones replied over the Comms, as they hadded back towards the Taun Tauns but I can understand what you mean to say. The results are quite interesting, though I can't yet make real sense of them without some time to properly analyse them. It looks like though, that the Obelisk we found in the Village is somehow tided to the Altar, which might have contributed to the situation somehow. I'm quite sure though, that the energy prior to explosion build up inside the Altar, triggering a cascade outwards.

As they arrive at the boulders where they left the tauntauns, the Jedi see one of the tauntauns lying on the ground. Running over, they discover that both tauntauns seem to have been weakened by radiation. It appears that the boulders, while the best cover they could find, aren't that great cover. The tauntauns get to their feet slowly, clearly affected by the radiation and the storm.

The tauntauns seem strong enough to carry the Jedi, but are clearly weakened. Probably, the scouts can determine much better how well the tauntaun are, so simply heading back seems to be the best choice.

The trek back to the village went smoothly, and after meeting up with the scouts the group had no problems navigating the terrain.

Of course, if they are to make their pickup, they had little time left to spend in the village. After a good nights rest they would have to trek back to the meeting. And with the storm, it wouldn't be as simple as just backtracking the route they took here — descending from the plateau would be difficult.

So again, as they were faced with a decision on the journey here, now they face the same decision about the route; but this time in reverse! The Jedi can decide to stay on the Orilon plateau as long as possible but experience the storm at its full strength, or they can decide take make the dangerous descend into the valley first and have a more protected journey.

((OOC: You'll have to make one choice and acompanying check for navigating the final leg back to the pickup.))

Darones pondered their options for a while before suggestion a possible solution to their problem.
Staying on the Plateau was easier, but the winds could cause serious problems not only for them, but also for the already weakened Tauntaun's. At least down in the Valley, they would be somewhat shielding from the brunt of the storm.

"Do you recon," Darones asked Trigiel, "that we are be strong enough to lift a Tauntaun for a while? Because if so, I might have a plan to get us down a little faster, though you may not like it as much. I propose we jump down...."

"Well," Darones explained, "We could see if we are able to lift a signle Tauntaun together. If we are able to maintain that weight for a little while, we could then blindfold them to prevent them from startling too much, while we jump of the edge of the cliff face.

This would limit the time required to descent and be considerably safer. It does mean we would need to make several trips in order to get them all down. On the other hand the sheer force of the impact might prove too much for them... What do you think?
