As minister of commerce I am looking at options to free some budget from the hyperspace lane upkeep that is currently paid by the Union. I was thinking about starting some kind of special project that would integrate the hyperspace lanes in our home sectors with the bozzy spine. This way we could save some upkeep.

The problem is that currently the upkeep is pretty high since we are paying 20 * 200 (:tax)/ (:turn) = 4000 (:tax) / (:turn). If we could integrate half of the calculation power into the bozzy spine it would save us 2000 (:tax) / (:turn) which is a very large amount.

The problem is that I have no idea what this would actually cost for the Union. I think that it is best implemented as a super power special project that lowers the initial upkeep of the hyperspace lanes directly connected to the bozzy spine. Would this project cost 25 * 2000 (:tax) = 50,000 (:tax) (based on the ministry investment rules) or is their a different calculation for this?

We can always lower the amount of upkeep that can be saved to lower the cost of the project. with saving only 25 (:tax) per hyperspace lane it would be less expensive and still provide a significant amount of Union budget that can be used for other things.

What do you guys think about this?

I think 50,000 (:tax) is a good baseline, as this concurs with the (currently in beta) ministry budgetting rules.

However, I would rather see this as a Union project, and thus not only costing (:tax)... I'd rather see this be something that actual PCs can contribute to in other ways than just paying (:tax).

I agree with Brend, then there is finally a reason for someone to build (:hyperspace-nodes) , as this is a great opportunity to use these special goods ;).

I think you should have a look at On technology design. It describes a few things on balancing the costs of such projects.

If the investment should be calculated over 52 (:turns) it is not worth the effort, since I can then better invest the Union budget using the 25 (:tax) for 1 (:tax) / (:turn) rule.
Allthough a large project that requires special goods and has a completion for every hyperspace lane could still be useful.

Maybe that 25 for 1 (:tax) / (:turn) is the best way of achieving your goal?

Calculations for Union wide upkeep saving project.

Link to the official proposal and estimates.

No more 25:1 investment rule, everything is calculated with 50:1 but Union scale discount could be in order.

I proposed this project in two phases. I think that the actual implementation of a phase could be about 10 (:turns).
Has anybody got anything to add or different ideas?

Your Bozzy Spine proposal looks okay to me. Go for it!
