I prefer the horizontal one. The reason is that the vertical one now integrates too well with the lay out. It does not really stand out as news line with the vertical scrolling.

That it doesn't stand out is exactly the point in my opinion. The site sshould be enhanced by the newsticker, not made less comfortable to look at.

I think I'll keep it like this for now.
