Incomming: Strike Missions!

Now the Mandalorian war is maturing into the all out war it is, there will be a special type of missions coming soon, the strike missions. We will try this type of missions for a while to see if they are adding anything to the roleplay experience.

The basic idea is that the ministry of defence will open some quick missions on a regular basis with a small and quick mission objective. (Like: go there, protect the ship and return it within 5 (:turn) , or escort the convoy with valuables, or destroy the sensor array etc.)

The missions are meant for the pc's to have a more feeling for the war as there are more micro scale activities, instead of only the war reports of the mega clash in sector 7 -5, and to be able to execute some influence on the war without being dependable on the NPC assets. This means that a pc can sent not only a jedi, but also a squadron, space ships and any other thing necessary for the mission to be successful. The impact of the missions should be big enough to feel on macro scale, but small enough to let the players who actually invested (:tax) in the war effort make the big differences.

Players with actual war material will have fitting bonuses during a strike mission. For example, if the mission is in the same sector as your fleet is, it is logical that you can call in reinforcements.

Here are a few NYFAQ (Not Yet Frequently Asked Questions.) If you still have questions or remarks concerning the strike missions, please post them :)

NYFAQ
Q: I don't have an army or fleet, what can I sent to a strike mission?
A: Everything you like as long as it is fitting. So you can sent a squadron, or some spaceships, an elite hacker, supplies, or your jedi of course, whatever is fitting for the mission.

Q: I have invested (:tax) in a fleet and army, why should I do this if we have strike missions?
A: The impact of the strike missions are not as large as the impact of a fleet. Aside this you can sent more to a strike mission when you have more assets, like a carrier, destroyer, orbital drop shock troopers. And you can get benefits like calling in an air strike, ask for reinforcements and other stuff you can get if your army or fleet is in the neighbourhood.

Q: Wait, I do not have a fleet, but I send my cruisers or destroyers as well!
A: To bad, no fleet, no large war machines. you should have invested in the war effort if you want to join the war effort on a larger scale.

Q: What type of impact can we expect?
A: Think about bottom up cascading effects, like be able to protect three trade fleets with your fleet instead of two, the ability to research new technology.

Q: I don't like the effects of the strike missions, what now?
A: The strike missions are an experiment, we will see how well it works and what for effects they should have. If the player base think it is too small, we can increase the effect, if the results turn out to be too impactful, we can reduce the impact again.

Q: Who will be leading the strike missions?
A: They will probably be started by the ministry of defence or by somebody else in the government by opening a motion of special enforcement. All the preparations can be done without a story teller. Once the real mission begins, they have to be led by somebody who is not directly involved in the mission, so he/she may not have a jedi or other asset in the mission to prevent story telling your own assets.

I like the idea as well. It combines the Jedi missions and the politics as it should.

I considered calling for special enforcement as well in the past few weeks but since the Military Fleet rules are still new I had my hands full with those. Now the super faction military fleets seem to be settling in, we have a chance to throw our own fleets and Jedi at them :)

This post explains what we (Elmer and Brend) think is a good guideline to determine what kind of military units you can pledge to a strike mission. We will be using this post as a guideline to determine what we will allow, so have a look at it!

Before the mission

The material Investments in military allow you to send more help. The following is a list with examples of what you can expect:
  • Active Military Fleet (i.e. Defensive or Combat-ready): Capital Ship + Small Escort
  • Inactive Military Fleet: 2 Cruisers + Small escort
  • Army: Special Operations Squad, Fighter Wing
  • Defence Force: Specialized Infantry + dropships, Specialized Armour + dropships
  • System: Infantry + Armour + dropships, Fighter wing

Name them While it is not necessary to write a full paragraph detailing all the ships and army units you send, you must give the ships, fighter wings, etc. at least a name. More details are appreciated, as they help the storyteller, but a name is mandatory.

Scaling up More investments in something allows you to send more. For example, having 2 armies would allow you to send more troops and tanks, and having two military fleets allows you to send more cruisers, etc.

Scaling down You're always allowed to send from a 'lower' category (pledge something from the Defence Force level while having an Army, for example), and in a lot of cases this makes sense. Though take care, sending Specialized Armour if you only have a fleet needs some explanation.

During the mission

If the strike mission happens to be in a (:hex) where you have one or more military assets, this allows you extra options during the mission!

A list of examples:
  • Active Military Fleet: Call in reinforcements; Call capital weapon/fighter/bomber strike
  • Inactive Military Fleet: Call in reinforcements
  • Army: Call in reinforcements; Call in support fire from artillery or precision bombardment
  • Defence Force: Call in support fire from artillery or precision bombardment
  • System: Call in Observation and Scanning

Note that both of these lists are examples and guidelines! They offer what we think is a good balance between letting everyone join in, and making sure that actual (:tax) investments are rewarded. These guidelines are intended to have fun, and not to min-max your way to having more stuff in the mission. Be reasonable about what you send ^_^
