[Unity] Meeting at the Starton Hotel <private>
((OOC: Private meeting of senator Salixa, senator Shahkra, senator Danar Tassar and senator Harek))
The Starton Hotel is located west of the center of Unity near the galactic gardens. This is a high class hotel with various wellness facilities. The building consists of one big dome with various towers and a few wings. When they enter the building they see that the dome is a star map with various stars, planets and other objects floating around. The pillars and walls look like obsidian which shines in various colors. The reception is made of star metal and the man at the desk tells them to take the central elevator to the sunset room. They go up through various galaxies in the star map and go higher and higher until they suddenly stop and a door opens in the dark.
The meeting rooms look to be on a moon with a sun shining on it, which seems to be setting soon. In the middle is a round star metal table with big comfortable chairs. In the center of the table is a covered sphere which contained probably a holo-projector. Senator Harek and his secretary T’Ralesh are standing to the side.
“Welcome, glad that you could make it, please take a seat.”
A Theelin waiter helps them get seated and offers them refreshments.

Senator Danar Tassar - PC
- Location: Unity
Senator Tassar was the first one to enter. He was wearing an informal single layered cross-breed between an Teprogrenaian Armour and normal clothing.
"Greetings Harek. You have selected a wonderful place for this meeting." He said while Tassar took the seat him was offered.
"Greetings Harek. You have selected a wonderful place for this meeting." He said while Tassar took the seat him was offered.
Shortly after, Senator Shahkra entered the room. She greeted the others with a small bow.
"Greetings."
And she took a seat as well.
"Greetings."
And she took a seat as well.
Senator Salixa was the last to join, wearing a Natural Beauty line gown of green fabric with vines growing into the fabric, and a brown faux-leather corset, gloves and boots. Her hair was done up and mixed with various mosses, making it greener than usual.
"Thank you for the invitation Senator Harek. Senator Danar Tassar, Senataor Shahkra." she greeted the other senators, before spreading her skirt out as she sat down, her posture perfectly straight though whether it was by nature or cutesy of the corset remained unclear.

"Lovely outfit, Senator Salixa." Shahkra said with her usual calm voice. Although it was rare for her to say anything not about work, let alone about the outfit of her colleagues.
"Senator Harek, how do you propose we proceed?"
"Senator Harek, how do you propose we proceed?"
"Thank you Senator Shahkra, that is most kind of you to say." She smiled warmly, seeming to genuinely appreciate the compliment.
"Indeed Senator Harek, please enlighten us!"
"Indeed Senator Harek, please enlighten us!"
Senator Harek takes a seat and orders some water.
"Dear colleges, there are two big points on the agenda tonight;
As politics tend to be hard on an empty stomach I would propose that we brainstorm and discuss the promotion of individual freedom and appropriate activities during dinner and then continue"
He waited for the other to approve of the course of action before continuing.
"We could hold a mini-congress on cultural difference on freedom, make a holoplatform on the subject or streamline our bureaucracy to make one intergalactic anti-slave front.

"Dinner would be desirable yes."

Senator Danar Tassar - PC

"Yes, let's order dinner.
We could hold a small congress, however, we of the Consensus believe it won't work when the changes we of the anti-slave front want to make are too fast and to rigorous. We of the Consensus believe a slow but steady approach is advised. The main point is how we of the anti-slave front see individual freedom, because it is certain that when the Veolian Commonwealth does not follow, they will find loopholes in our reasoning."

"This is not a discussion about tax-breaks, about whether or not to form a committee or about the impact of government subsidies on the tomato industry!"
The senator from Remunzia suddenly burst out, with a passion that she rarely displayed in the senate.
"We aren't talking about numbers on a datapad, these are real people who are suffering real pain!
If we are going to handle this as if it is a sensitive issue where we must choose our words carefully and where we must ensure we do not offend those who hold different views from ourselves, not only are we doing a disservice to the millions of people who are impacted by the brutality of slavery, but we will be playing right into the hand of the Veolians and those who share their beliefs that sentients are objects to be owned!
You all know the Veolian Commonwealth holds most of the cards when it comes to this type of political discourse - their influence and ability to manipulate the playing field is already legendary and if we engage them in a peaceful, senatorial discussion trying to achieve mutual understanding and appeasement, we will certainly fail to have any meaningful impact.
This is not a matter of politics, it is a matter of morality, and we have the moral high ground, so let's make use of it!
Let's do away with the pretence that 'not beating your slaves' somehow makes the practice of -owning- people any less disgusting!
Let's do away with the idea that some sentient beings are inherently less valuable then others and may therefore be traded, abused and exploited!
Let's do away with the notion that slavery can ever be acceptable in any way, shape or form!
This is one of those points where we can fairly and justly say that those who are not with us are against us. If you know that slavery is happening in your corner of the galaxy, and you take no action, then you are as guilty as the one who holds the whip!"
Realising she had gone from discussing to preaching, Senator Salixa stopped herself, taking a deep breath, or at least as deep as her corset would allow, as her face re-established its pale colour from the red it had been showing mere moments ago.

While Senator Salixa is talking the first course is brought to the table. It seemed that from each world a starter is on a big plate so they could share it together.
"I agree Senator Danar Tassar that we should first formulate our point of view precisely before we can check-out our other colleagues and spread our believes.
Senator Salixa action indeed need to be taken, but therefor we need to form one strong front otherwise the Veolians will use their influence to break it up. We should not be too rash and alienate people. Steadily increasing the promotion, will make acceptance easier.
Would you like to try some Hiocan pickled cactus? "

The Remunzian Senator nodded, taking some of the pickled cactus at Senator Harek's suggestion.
"Exactly whom do you fear would be alienated by the suggestion that slavery is disgusting?" the Senator inquired after a few moments.

"I prefer the Aracapice bugs, thank you." Tassar ordered for dinner.
"The main problem of the whole slavery issue is the Veolian Commonwealth. They are the prominent holders of slaves. When they are convinced not to have slaves, the whole slavery business will die out within the Union pretty fast. Or will have died out.
The situation is two fold for us of the Consensus, senator Salixa. We have the political cultural situation where slavery is disgusting, and we have the economical situation where we are dependent of the Veolian Commonwealth. There are not many factions in the Union capable of fulfilling the needs of the Teprogrenaian Consensus. Therefore we don't have the luxurious position to boycott the Veolian Commonwealth. The Veolian Commonwealth also have many allies, both political as economical, who are probably quite willingly to stop trading with the Teprogrenaian Consensus if the Veolian Commonwealth ask them to do so. Their monopoly on Terraformation sets them in quite a powerful position.
We try to split our economical dependencies, and limit our connections to the Veolian Commonwealth, but it is impossible for us to cut all ties with them if we like to grow to an influential faction and not fall back to a protectorate state or worse."

"Senator Salixa, there are some worlds with strong opinions or loud senators. Cultural differences need to be treated carefully or this will have various consequences like senator Danar Tassar said.
As you are concerned about our colleagues we can also now just talk about it. I think the High Chiefdom of Skulda and New Communist Emperium of the Rising sun of Deominius will also not favor individual freedom, but I think the Mioman Colonist is on our side. For a lot of the other factions I am not sure where they stand. I would very much like to know the opinion of the Kingdoms of Komès and Meritonia."
After all the talking the starters where finished and the next courses are brought to the table and the glasses are re-filled. The holy sun has set and the scenery changes to that of another world with a lot of plant life and flowers. There are two moons in the sky and a new great orange sun is setting.

"I can say that the High Chiefdom of Skuldda won't be against slavery, nor will the support it. They are rather indifferent about it. Although they have a very strict caste system, there is not something like a slave and elite caste, as the children are able to choose their caste by a set of tests once they come of age.
They will probably dismiss the slavery issue as irrelevant and once pressed, their answer is most likely: 'let's race about it.' "

"I am not planning on racing or do you want to?"
Senator Harek looks to Senator Shahkra.
"It is time to talk about our changes to convince others. So please feel see to talk about possibilities.
I am not so familiar with religion but I think we could find support within he Divine Fiefdom of Highmons and the Holy Heimgolian Theocracy. What do you think?"

"The Divine Fiefdom of Highmons believe very much in the soul. I am not sure about their stance of slavery, especially since they despite droids, but I think they value the soul to the point that slavery is an abomination, since only the divine creator has the right to create and own souls.
The same goes for the Hole Heimgolian Theocracy, although they are more tolerant with their religious views. Maybe Senator Tassar knows a little more?"

"I'm sorry to say that I have little knowledge about the viewpoints on slavery of the other factions. Maybe we should create a list of all the factions and note their basic viewpoints around slavery. This should help evaluate our political position."
"I already made an overview, but as quite some information was missing I did not want to show it. Miss T’Ralesh is you could please show the updated version."
Senator Hareks secretary uses her datapad and makes a connection to the holoprojector in the middle of the table. It then shows the following table.

"We of the Consensus think there are two major kind of approaches. We of the anti slave front either try to convince the factions in the senate who are not strong believers, and use group pressure to let the other factions like the Veolian Commonwealth to abolish slavery.
Or we try to directly convince the strong believers like the Veolian Commonwealth, and use that leverage to abolish slavery in the Union altogether.
In any case, we of the anti slave front require a solid definition of slavery, otherwise the discussion will result in how the slave practitioners are free of our ideas since we don't know what we are talking about."

Another sun sets in the room and the holoprojects again change landscapes. The main course is removed and glasses are refilled. Shortly, afterwards various deserts are served.
"I prefer the first approach as I do not think the Veolians will change their minds quickly.
Having a good definition will indeed improve our position in a debate. Therefore we need to hold a small conference, who is interested in organizing this event?"

The Senator had remained silent for a while, either to keep herself from bursting out in anger or to give others a chance to voice their idea's. Finally she felt a need to speak up once again, though she did so more calmly than before.
"If this alliance is unwilling or unable to take serious action to end slavery then it is doomed from the very beginning. These people need freedom, Senator, not an update to the dictionary! I was not elected to watch these people suffer and die while you discuss vocabulary in a committee!"

"Senator Salixa I understand your frustration but you have to look to the bigger picture and have patience."
Senator Harek paused as to let senator Salixa cool down a little bit. He then looks her serious in the eye.
"YOU are a senator and senators are elected to fight with WORDS and not muscles. You can go out and liberate a few people if you want, but I would like to see EVERYBODY BE FREE within Union territory. To accomplish that we need a NEW LAW, which has to be written. Therefor, we need a clear definition. If we do not take our time to discuss this thoroughly, there might be a loophole and the other fractions will undermine it. I DO NOT WANT THAT. "
