((OOC: This thread is private to the Stellarian Triad Federation and the Veolian Commonwealth.))

The new Stellarian Triad Federation embassy was built with a modern Astrian design and held several buildings. The curved shapes combined with the reflective silverish colour and blue lights gave the buildings a hightech look. The gate was guarded by three cyborgs wearing STF Marine Corps dress uniforms and the small building next to the gate held a few more.

Upon identifying themselves the Marines immediately let the Veolian Senator and her Twi'lek servant through, saluting the women.

Lady-Senator Maria Latharion stood in front of the entrance of the main building. Next to her a woman in a black formfitting dress was talking to her, until the two noticed their guests.

"Senator Nehket, Miss Serrah, welcome." The Astrian Senator said, bowing to the both of them. Gesturing to the woman next to her she continued. "This is Doctor Miranda Asillion, the Medical Engineer that will attend this meeting and one of the Chiefs of Medicine here on Unity for Astrians."

Miranda bowed to Senator Nehket Aeka and Serrah.

"I would be honoured to teach you about Astrian cybernetics. I hope you will not find my presence at this meeting disturbing."

The veolian senator bowed to the two women.

"Senator Maria, it is good to meet you again in person."

"Doctor Miranda Asillion, it is a pleasure to meet you. Why would I find you presence disturbing?", the veolian senator looked the doctor over.

Maria guided the women inside to a lounge, where they all sat down.

A butler entered and asked the women if they wanted something to drink.

After the butler had taken everyone's orders he left to go prepair the drinks.

"What should we start with? We have a lot to talk about."

Still outside Miranda replied to the guests.

"Please call me Miranda."

As they went inside she continued.

"I believe the things we will discus might be sensitive, as a complete stranger, I can understand my presence could be disturbing."

After they sat down in the lounge.

"Would you mind if I keep my pager on? If there is an emergency, the hospital could need me. They would only page me if there is no alternative though."

Aeka sat down.

"I trust that, as a doctor, you understand the value of confidentiality.", she replied to Miranda, "Besides, Maria would not have invited you if she couldn't trust you, and while we may have differing opinions, I trust her judgement."

"Though this might seem strange for such a meeting, might I suggest that we start off by informally introducing ourselves? It is my experience that difficult talks go much smoother if all participants feel they can speak informally. And since we're all women, there is no need to require much formality; there are no men that would feel insulted or slighted at the drop of a hat."

"I propose that Maria goes first, followed by me, followed by docter Assilion, followed by Serrah?"

"I'm afraid I am a bit uncertain how I would do that." Maria responded.

"If you could go first yourself, Aeka, followed by myself, then Serrah and then Miranda. Then it can go as you had in mind."

Nehket Aeka noted the difference in order not only switch her with the other senator, but also put Serrah in front of doctor Asillion. This had two explanations though, so she opted for the 'alternating factions' explanation.

"It would be my pleasure to start.", she responded. "I will explain a few things as I go, so you get an idea of why I am telling you these things. First off, one starts with stating one's family and lineage, up to a certain point of course."

"My father, Nehket Etār, Patriarch of house Nehket and Grand Duke of the Ghūnghata Isles, springs from a marriage between Lord Nehket Purvaj and Lady Shebi Mahana. My mother, Shaghari Imakāna, my father's second wife and Grand Duchess of theGhūnghata Isles, is the first born daughter of Lord Shaghari Orilan."

"Rarely, one states one's titles and holdings as well, but it is usually assumed that the others are aware of your status. Since it has little bearing on our current meeting, and would only bore you, I chose to leave most out, and only mention that my father is the patriarch of house Nehket. This would lead you to conclude that I am a princess.

Then, on to the first real personal information: the moment one became hemet. For those that have not or not yet become hemet, a profound experience from the past is usually used."

"My second breadth was slightly embarrassing. I was sixteen at the time, and I had just returned home after a semester of school abroad. I opted to walk through the garden, as it was fall and the gardens were always beautiful in that time of year. During my walk, I spotted a couple kissing. As I walked closer a little curiously, I recognized my favourite servant girl, and judging from his dress he was some low noble.

In a fit of jealousy, I ran over there to teach him a lesson in humility. halfway there, while I ran, the world around me started to flare light-blue, and the second breadth overcame me. With my new-found power, I threw him away from my bed mate, and into the pond.

It turned out that I had just thrown his imperial highness prince Saret Kamurin into the pond. Needless to say, his imperial highness was not amused. My father was furious, and twelve years later, my house was passed over when invitations were sent to attend the marriage of prince Saret Kamurin."

"So, now you know a life-changing experience of mine. This serves both as a basis for further conversation, as it gives a few interesting facts about me. The circumstances of the second breadth are usually seen as indicative of a hemet's temperament. I leave it to you what this says about me.

Finally, a little about my current hobbies and projects, so we can see if we have any commonalities that might serve as an anchor point in the conversation."

"Currently, my time to pursue leisurely activities is limited. What little time I have, I like to spend on tennis. Every few weeks, I entertain a potential mate, but so far I have not met my perfect match. Me and my date usually visit the opera in Unity City. And when I have time left after that, I try to spend it with my slave Serrah, who has assumed my role as senator."

"On Mirda, such an introduction is usually followed by inviting the next person to tell something of themselves. The trick here is to estimate the intentions of another party, and address them accordingly. One should pay careful attention to the use of titles and names, in veolian culture the use of family and given name offers a lot of insight into a relationship between two people. Of course, I put less weight on such nuances, though it is difficult to completely ignore centuries worth of such hinting."

"Now that you know about me, would you like to tell us a bit about yourself, Maria?"

"I will do my best."

Maria took a deep breath.

"Unfortunately I can't say anything about my lineage, I lived in an orphanage for the first seven years of my life. My parents left me on it's doorstep without even a name. The only family I have is a few close friends and my partner... and of coarse our child that will be born soon."

"If I have to think of an important memory, I'd say it was the first time I met my partner. Coincidentally it was also the first time I saw Stellaria from orbit. I remember the sight left me breathless and I uttered the word 'beautiful' and Emily agreed with me. To be honest I'm not entirely sure if I was referring to the planet or her."

"My hobbies include evening walks and visiting art museums. When I'm not to busy with my duties as Lady-Senator or Minister of Defence, I like to spend time with my partner and our friends.

Could you tell us a bit about yourself, Serrah?"

"Of course, that is what we are here for, after all."

"I must admit that I too know little of my lineage. My mother and father, Nuro'even and Hassla'ecura, lived on a Hutt world. When I was eight, I was sold to a travelling trader. He wanted to increase my value, by learning me to read and write, and to do calculations by head. So I learned."

"My view on life was changed when my owner at that time died when his fortress was attacked by an opposing Hutt. His men, most were ruthless bounty hunters, quickly grabbed as many valuables and slaves as they could, and fled. I was taken by a small group of them and was powerless to resist. Together with a few other slaves, I was thrown in the brig of a space ship. We flew for several days, and they were not kind to us.

I don't know how long we flew, but all of a sudden there was shouting and sounds of combat. Now you must understand, these bounty hunters were the elite troops of my previous master. But they stood no chance. The only thing I saw of the combat was a large veolian man, wearing a very ancient-looking armour, his eyes glowing brightly blue. He barged into the brig, bleeding from a cutting wound. The short struggle between him and our guard ended when the guard's back was broken by the veolian. When the fight was over, we learned that there were only two veolians: a man and a woman. Together they had killed all seven bounty hunters.

The it dawned on me. I thought the Hutt were powerful, but they are weaklings that rely on others for their strength. I had never in my life seen people so powerful, or so intimidating, and I wanted to serve them instead of the Hutt."

"I have now been my mistress' property for the last fifteen years, and I still work with numbers. I'm actually rather good with them, I juggle them, massage them, and finally put them to paper in a form that is pleasing to my mistress. As her slave, I also represent my mistress by negotiating and signing treaties on her behalf. In my spare time I swim, and I make paper, preferably from actual trees. Of course I also make sure that I am always available, should Aeka desire me, or my presence.", she looked at Nehket Aeka, with a mischievous spark in her eyes, "I also like to shop, and spend large amounts of my mistress' money."

"Now that you know this about me, I would love for doctor Asillion to tell us a bit about herself."

Miranda barely managed to cover up a laugh at Serrah's comment about shopping.

Regaining composure she started to speak.

"With pleasure.

My father is Gerald Odarian, currently one of the CEO's of the Crystalline Optics Concern, the second son of William Odarian and Esmiralda Hermitage. My mother was Illiana Asillion, daughter of Terian Karteros and Nathan Terios. She died when I was fifteen. I have two older sisters and one younger brother."

"The day my brother was convicted of murder was the day that changed my life. I didn't believe he committed the crime then and I still believe to this very day he was framed. I lost my faith in the incorruptibility of the justice system. I have yet to regain that faith."

"In my free time I like to read, go stargazing with my friends and do charity work. Mostly helping out at school events or as a hiking guide.

Well now that we are done with introductions, what shall we start with?"

It was Serrah that spoke up, after casting a glance at her mistress.

"Let's start with asking a few questions. For example, I have been wondering for some time now about Astrian implants. I know that all Astrians have cybernetic implants, but it appears that you prefer to hide them. From this, I take it that your culture values the natural form. I have seen only a few Astrians, mostly women, and all of them were attractive. My question then is: do your implants usually allow you to improve your appearance?"

"Well, keep in mind beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

But to answer your question, yes. Astrian cybernetics allow us to change our appearance. This even goes to the point where a person doesn't resemble our species any more."

"Travellers are a good example of this.

Exactly how much appearance can be adjusted depends on the amount of cybernetics a person has or wants."

Miranda paused a moment before continuing, giving a quick glance to Maria.

"It's not so much that we hide our implants, but most are internal. I'm sure you can agree that placing a brain implant outside the protection of the skull is not very practical.

Most parents or guardians keep the amount of cybernetics of their children to a minimum, at least until they are old enough to make their own choices and know the consequences or the choice. That creates a certain view of and familiarity with this type of appearance, this results in a more comfortable feeling with cybernetics that mimic that appearance."

After Miranda had finished explaining, Maria gave a quick look at Aeka.

"Serrah, I have heard from Aeka that you are treated well.

However, I would appreciate it if you could confirm you aren't mistreated in any way."

Glancing at Aeka she added: "I ask it purely for my own peace of mind, I mean no disrespect."

"That question defeats itself, doesn't it?" Serrah smiled. "Under the assumption that my owner wishes you to leave this meeting with a more positive disposition towards slavery in the commonwealth, she would only take me with her to this meeting if she knew I would do and say those things that would give you the impression that I not mistreated in any way. So either, she would take a slave that she hasn't mistreated, or she would take a slave that she was sure wouldn't acknowledge being mistreated. So me confirming that I am not mistreated is not a very good indicator of the way my mistress treats her slaves."

"Let me be absolutely honest", she continued with an apologetic glance towards her mistress. She then looked at the Astrian senator: "She is a hemet veolian, and as such she can be extremely demanding, both mentally and physically. I do not feel that I have been mistreated. I can not say whether you would say the same thing, if you knew all that I experienced with my mistress."

Nehket Aeka thoughtfully looked at Maria and Miranda. Then she came to a conclusion.

"Maria, doctor Asillion, if I have your solemn word that you will keep the things we discuss on the topic of my personal property in this room, I have no problems with allowing Serrah to be open about anything I have done to her. I also have no objections to doctor Asillion inspecting her to see if there are any indications of mistreatment, which I presume as part of the reason she is here.

I do ask you, and doctor Asillion, to keep an open mind. Our cultures differ greatly, and what I do with my property is both very private and could be far removed from your culture's zone of comfort.

And if you do wish to inspect Serrah for any physical indications, I ask that you do so here, with me present. Though I trust Maria, we are in Stellarian Triad Federation territory, and if I understand your form of government correctly, someone else might decide that Serrah has to be freed, and take matters into their own hands."

Maria paid close attention to Serrah when she answered. As her response came out naturally and without hesitation, it seemed sincere.

That alone already put Maria at ease.

"Very well, it shall remain between these four walls." She stated. "Aeka, while this goes for you and Serrah, is there anything you can say about other Veolians and how they treat their... property." Maria hesitated with the last word.

Aeka turned to Maria to reply, not paying much attention to what doctor Asillion and Serrah were doing.

"Of course, Maria. It depends on the preferences of the owner. Some give their slaves great freedoms in how they spend their time, others like their property close by and controlled. Though in all cases, the care and development of one's slaves are a serious matter. We encourage the development or our property, and most of us have enrolled our property in prestigious universities, or have arranged for our property to train under renowned masters."

"The laws on slavery are as old as the commonwealth. They contain details on the buying and selling of slaves, and go on at length on the duties of an owner with regards to their property. They also describe how one becomes a slave, and what kinds of arrangements should be in place, both for commoners and for nobles. For example: if someone is not a slave but you desire to have them as such, it is legally required to ask that person whether they consent to become your slave. Of course, this is not required if you buy a slave, as that person is already a slave.

Another example of the import we place on our slaves: I will be held personally accountable for all actions taken by Serrah, regardless of those actions. For most laws in the commonwealth, it is as if she were me; we even have a distinct word for it: 'Ghataka'. I have not yet found a perfect translation, though it roughly translates to ingredient, constituent, agent, intermediary, and messenger."

Then there is another intricacy to our laws on slavery that might interest you: though the disciplining of a slave is allowed, they clearly state that excessive beating of a slave is not allowed. In fact, just one and a half year ago, a noble was exiled for beating his slave. The event was even picked up on in the Union Central News."

"Is there anything in particular you wanted to know about? There are only 2.4 million slaves on Mirda, roughly 1 slave per 1000 hemet veolians, and the imperial coffers demand a payment per slave per year to discourage those incapable of maintaining their property from owning any at all. The keeping of such exquisite property is reserved to the really wealthy and influential. As such it is difficult to tell you of the average case as there really isn't one."

"I see. I wasn't aware you had such laws, but I'm relieved you do."

Maria's expression confirmed what she said.

"Knowing that will certainly squelch some of the STF's criticism.

Can a slave own personal property, without it immediately belonging to their owner?"

Ignoring the conversation between Aeka and Maria, Miranda gave her full attention to Serrah.

"If you don't mind, please."

As Serrah disrobed, Miranda rubbed her hands together as if she was washing them. As she did the colour of her skin started to turn to a metallic black.

Once they where both done, Miranda started her examination.

First she examined Serrah's lekku, holding them very gentile to cause her no pain. Then she looked at Serrah's eyes. Serrah could notice the colour of Miranda's eyes had changed to a luminescent blue.

"Open your mouth and say 'Ah', please."

As Serrah complied, Miranda crouched a little to get a better look of the inside of Serrah's throat and mouth. She placed her hands under Serrah's jaw, gently rubbing with her middle- and index-finger.

Continuing like that Miranda examined Serrah's whole body, gently pressing wherever bones where near the surface.

"Ok, almost done. Just a few more things." She said after she finished with that.

Miranda then put two fingers on Serrah's chest, around where her heart should be. After a moment she shifted her fingers a little to the right, then to Serrah's side.

Then she continued to Serrah's back. "Sigh please." After Serrah had sighed she shifted her fingers. "Again please..., again..., again..." Each time shifting her fingers.

Finally Miranda grabbed Serrah's upper arm with one hand, and her index-finger with the other.

"This will get a bit tight." Miranda warned.

And like she said her hand wrapped around Serrah's arm tightly. After a few moments it got a bit looser, then a little more and after one more time Miranda released her.

"Blood-pressure 122 over 86, heart-rate 72 beats per minute, oxygen-saturation 99%. You are in excellent health, Miss Serrah, you can put your clothes back on."

Miranda's hands and eyes turned back to their original colour as she turned her attention back to the others.

At Miranda's request Serrah quickly disrobes. Miranda quickly discovered that Serrah wore only a single layer of clothing, and nothing underneath it; if Miranda read up on veolian culture before coming to this meeting, she would already know that this was very common, as normal veolian clothing styles featured only a single layer.

Serrah was a bit surprised to see Miranda's hands and eyes change colour. "Well, that is a powerful demonstration of appearance altering cybernetics", she spoke softly so she wouldn't interrupt the others.

As Miranda was inspecting Serrah by gently pressing where bones where near the surface, she discovered that the Twi'lek women had a single tattoo. The tattoo was on the skin over her pubic symphysis (the first bone found when moving down from the navel), and depicted some kind of symmetric tribal. The tattoo was easy to miss, as it was done in dark red ink a few shades darker than Serrah's skin colour.

After Miranda was done, Serrah donned her clothing again and leaned over towards the doctor.

"You have very gentle hands, doctor.", she whispered before sitting down herself where she sat before.
