And now, for the latest news in the Union:

((OOC: This topic is intended to provide some background information on the FWURGiverse. It is not intended for stories that have direct political consequences, so don't expect news-flashes like the one that started with the Twi'lek pilot crash - those will get their own threads where people can debate.

However, it is also a chance for -you- as players to share stories about your characters and your world. Example stories might be an interview with your Senator about their personal lives, the results of an election on your planet, a background piece dealing on the etymology of your factions name, even a recipe's to provide insight into the diet of your species, etc.

So feel free to post your news!))

Fireball hits Union City Opera!

Unity City -
This is Elrinka for Union Central News, reporting live from Section 17 in Unity City, where a fireball of unknown origin has just hit the city opera building!

It is at this time unknown what exactly has happened, but a witness accounted seeing a shuttle-craft which was according to the witness 'already on fire and going down'.

So far, reports are of at least seven wounded and possibly one fatality.

More on this as the story develops!

Image

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"This is just in, according to one of the medical officers who responded to the incident, the fireball was indeed a crashing shuttle-craft, and they were additionally able to report that the pilot was a Twi'lek male who he said has survived the crash and is currently being tre..."

Elrinka listened in her ear a moment.

"I have just heard word from the studio that apparently several surface-to-space missile batteries at the edge of the city have been armed and that the Senate building has gone into security lock-down and that..."

Elrinka was interrupted again by a loud roar as an X-wing fighter flew overhead, joining a V formation of five and launching out of the cities energy shield into space, the shockwave almost tossing the camera-man off his feet."

"Are you okay? Cut to commercials!" Elrinka instructed though only pavement was visible from the camera.

Immediately, the news switched to two animated Ewoks singing about a new brand of toilet paper.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Image

When the need is greatest, Endorian Toilet Paper comes to save the day!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fortunately, the commercials ended swiftly.

"This is just in:

Apparently, the shuttle that crashed into the Union City Opera has been shot down by a foreign vessel, which according to our sources resembles the configuration of a Hutt Corvette.

At this point it does not appear as if there are more Hutt ships in the area, but the Senate is likely to want a full investigation into the incident.

Back to the studio."

Nematode Unita

Unity City - Nematode Unita, a strange name and no less strange a creature. Resistant to very low temperatures and high levels of radiation, this a-sexually reproducing roundworm feeds on bacteria and algea.

Why should the Union Central News make a story about this creature that is less than 50 micrometers in length? Because it is the first complex multi-celled creature to be deliberately released on Unity, the rogue planet from which the Union is governed.

As part of the Terraformation process, this remarkable creature will help control the populations of single-celled life in the area's where these creatures exist, so as to prevent burst-growth which may result in disruptions of the ecosystem that is being built.

Nematode Unita may not be the most impressive of sights, but it is the precursor to the introduction of more advanced forms of life and its release into the 'wild' marks a milestone in the terraformation process. Lead engineer of the Nematode sub-project B'tingfong had this to say:

"Bringing life to a world like Unity is a very special challenge, and as a result Unita is a very special pioneer. As leader of the Nematode sub-project for the terraformation of Unity, and on behalf of all of my collegues who have aided in making this possible, I have but one thing to say to Unita:

Go forth and multiply!"

Prayer Advisory from the Holy Heimgolian Theocracy

Theocratia - The Holy Heimgolian Theocracy wishes to advise the following parable from the Holy Books for considderation in the prayers of all Heimgolian missionaries, citizens and faithful abroad:

"The Goddess Hi'ninin had two large pots, each hung on the
ends of a pole which she carried across her neck.

One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect
and always delivered a full portion of water.

At the end of the long walks from the stream to the house,
the cracked pot arrived only half full.

For a full two years this went on daily, with the Goddess bringing
home only one and a half pots of water.

Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments.

But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and
miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to do.

After two years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, it spoke
to the Goddess one day by the stream.

"I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes
water to leak out all the way back to your house."

Hi'ninin smiled, "Did you notice that there are flowers on
your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side?"

"That's because I have always known about your flaw,
so I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and
every day while we walk back, you water them."

"For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers
to decorate the table.

Without you being just the way you are, there would not be
this beauty to grace the house."

Each of us has our own unique flaw. But it's the cracks and flaws
we each have that make our lives together so very interesting and
rewarding.

You've just got to take each person for what they are and look
for the good in them. Even if they are crackpots."

Total Eclipse on Suman homeworld

Unity City - This evening, the primary moon of the Suman homeworld will perfectly align with its sun. This event, taking place only once every years, is unique in that the moon perfectly covers the sun.

On most worlds, the moon is either too close, making it appear larger than the sun or too far away making it simply appear as a black spot on the sun, but the Suman homeworld is aligned just so that its primary moon leaves only the solar flares visible. This is considdered especially beautiful by many sentient races.

The Suman people themselves do not appear to be impressed. One citizen was quoted as saying 'Meh', while another commented more enthausiastically 'I wish I could see it this time, but I have to work. In a few years though when it occurs again, my boss has promised I would get the day off though'.

Due to the long Suman lifespan, they get to experience a great many of these events, though people from other worlds sometimes travel to the Suman homeworld to witness this event.

Last night, the Virenii Clan elected and installed its new president in a private ceremony. In the Lifebringer Clans' complicated system of associations and unions, elections and changes in leadership happen on a daily basis. While the Virenii Clan is a large organisation, which functions comparably to a Department of Logistics in other nations, this election was unremarkable save for one fact.

The new president, Ciiilphiiirään Lïïph Tik Ikas Virenii, is an Uplift member of society, and the first of his race to attain a public function of this impact in Lifebringer Clan society.

"The time had come," Ciiilphiiirään remarked dryly, when asked about his election, "and some would argue it was long overdue. Joining the Union has brought our nation such prosperity that it has opened people's minds to the reality. Most people are thinking on a larger scale now. On the scope of the Union, heritage no longer matters, and we are all simply a part of the Lifebringer Clans." When asked about his long-term expectations and possible political ambitions, Ciiilphiiirään stated his interests lie with the Virenii Clan, and declined further comment.

Ciiilphiiirään's election is not surprising to insiders. He was one of the architects behind the Clans' Great Change, the complete restructuring of the Clans' economy to function as an Union member. Its resounding success earned Ciiilphiiirään the respect of many prominent economists, paving the way for his election.

The ceremony was marred by a demonstration of several dozen religious activists, chanting slogans such as "Squids have no souls!". They were drowned out by the massive counter-demonstration organised by the Tik and sympathising factions. Security forces were on hand to quell any unrest and to keep the groups apart, but both demonstrations remained entire peaceful.

((OOC: I was working my way through Wookieepedia, but I couldn't find any cephalopod fauna for uplifting. I'll stick with 'squid' for now, but people are welcome to provide ideas. :P))

Major Industrial Accident!

There has been a major industrial accident in the Tirbu System, the home system of the High Chiefdom of Skuldda. One of the biggest shipyards in the sector, the Floating Factory, suffered from an enormous explosion of unknown origin, causing the shipyard to sink 2 miles into the ocean.

The Floating Factory, which had a surface area of over 200 square kilometres with multiple decks, produced Mass Transit Cargo Freighters which were sold all over the Union.

Under normal circumstances, hundreds of thousands of people live and work on board the Floating Factory, however rescuers have already reported finding many castaways as well as small boats and emergency floatation devices. At this time, the total number of deaths is 'impossible to estimate'.

Jedi have been sent to investigate the explosion, but regardless of the cause, the destruction of this factory will have a significant impact on the Skulddan people and economy and the Unions ability to deliver Mass Transit Cargo Freighters, and will likely cause the prices of these goods to rise soon.

Our hearts go out to the victims and their families.

Search and Rescue effort launched from Mirda

Mirda - Roughly three hours after the tragic news about the Floating Factory accident the Veolian Commonwealth sent 10.000 disaster response personnel to the Tirbu system.

The Veolian Commonwealth maintains disaster response teams consisting of 10 hemet veolians, each team is equipped with the latest medical equipment and, each team member has at least 300 years of training and experience with search and rescue operations. Additionally the operation includes two prototype Disaster Response Support vessels, designed specifically for aerial support to ground teams during large-scale calamities.

The Veolian teams are commanded by Lady Iaat Mirasindra and will join the teams already on site at Tirbu and coordinate their efforts with the local authorities.

Veolian noble exiled for slave beating

Mirda - A minor Veolian noble, Lord Aradi Gharis, has been exiled from Veolian territory after a lengthy trial. The trial lasted five weeks, after which he was found guilty by a jury of his peers. The noble was found guilty on the charges of assault and battery with regard to one of his slaves, the Twi'lek Koyi Norida.

Lord Aradi Gharis was caught in the act by Lady Dewa Rigu, who was visiting the Aradi estates to arrange a marriage. She testified to hearing a call for help, and rushing in to find Lord Aradi beating the Twi'lek girl. "Lady Dewa was literally ablaze with anger. She would have torn his Lordship to pieces if the house guards did not arrive as soon as they did.", according to a member of the estate staff.

Both wives of Lord Aradi filed for divorce only twenty-four hours after his arrest. Both women cited 'irreconcilable differences' and 'failure to consummate the marriage' as the reasons for divorce. Both divorces were approved mere hours before the sentence was passed, effectively ending the Aradi line.

"I am glad that he is gone now, and hope that others like him will think twice before hurting a slave. I am happy with Lady Dewa, my new mistress. She has already proven herself to be gentle and makes sure I am well cared for." answered the Twi'lek slave in response to questions about her well-being.

Floating Factory Salvaged

Tirbu System - With the aid of Veolian and Praetorian engineers, the High Chiefdom of Skuldda has managed to salvage the Floating Factory, sunk due to an industrial accident several months ago.

Industrial engineers went in to asses the damage and to get the factory operational again, after teams secured the remains of many individuals who perrished in the accident.

Senator Lonco Morubixaba of Skuldda was quoted as saying: "We are finally able to give a burial to the unfortunate souls who perrished in this terrible event. Our thoughts are with them and their families."

Experts suggest that the factory may become operational again soon, which would no doubt affect the prices of Mass Transit Cargo Freighters, who are currently at record high. Investors responded well to the happy news, with all stocks in the industry climbing upwards.

Reserve fleet arrives in Pandora System

Pandora System - One of the Unions reserve fleets, previously stationed in the Fulaut system has relocated to the Pandora System, where its flagship will soon be docking at the planet Industrium.

The fleet will patrol the sector and surrounding area, with Industrium serving as a supply point and drydock facility for vessels in need of repairs and maintenance. While it is currently being supplied by the Confederacy of Excaria, the Pandorans will soon take over this duty, something which no doubt will boost their developing economy.

When asked for the reasons why the fleet was repositioned to this sector, Defense Minister Bolv'ar stated: "As always, I cannot offer comment on matters of national security, including any and all fleet movements."

Economic changes

Unity - Next week the Union imposed price roof on Holonet Relays and Hyperspace Nodes will end, leading experts to believe that the prices of these goods will jump up significantly.

Economist Ruban'E Coldor stated: "At this time, Electronics and ICT Technology manufacturers are having trouble keeping up with the demand, leading to a rise in prices for these goods. The pricing roof was already low, but with this added pressure, expect these goods to boom in the coming weeks.

Prices of Hyperspace Nodes are also being released and sellers are likely to take the opportunity to raise prices. With the reactivation of the Floating Factory, however, we can expect that Mass Transit Cargo Freighter prices will take a significant drop."

In other economic news, as the new economies in the Union gain influence, they are better able to get good prices selling goods to the open market and they will even be able to get raw materials more easily.

Senator Lonco Morubixaba of Skuldda Arrested!

Unity - This morning Senator Lonco Morubixaba of Skuldda was arrested on Unity Transport Way 5, after allegedly participating in an illegal street-race, during which his speeder apparently rammed six other vehicles including a police speeder. According to sources within the police department, the Senator had a blood-alcohol level of 0.15, which for his species means he was quite drunk.

There is currently an ongoing debate amongst legal specialists regarding whether or not diplomatic immunity applies to this incident, but for public safety, the police decided to keep him at least until his blood-alcohol level drops back to normal values.

While he is being held, his aide Cabew Illix will represent Skuldda in the Senate. Notably, Skuldda has made no request of the Unity police to have the Senator released or given into Skulddan custody, making it quite clear that the Skulddan government is not pleased with the Senators behaviour.

Senator Lonco Morubixaba of Skuldda convicted!

Unity - After being arrested on Unity Transport Way 5 for illegal street-racing and ramming six vehicles including a police speeder, Senator Lonco has now been convicted on most of the charges, including drunken driving, breaking the speed limit and grossly endangering traffic.

The Senator has been sentenced to four months in prison. With reduction of his arrest during the trial, this means he will be released in early March. Additionally, the Senators drivers license has been revoked.

Legal experts have determined that in normal circumstances, the Senator would have diplomatic immunity - however, the Skuldda government has chosen to withdraw the Senators immunity in this case. They have refused to comment on their exact motivation.

In the meanwhile, Cabew Illix will continue to represent Skuldda in the Senate. Some sources suggest he may be promoted to Senator at a later date.

Genetic correction programme disappointing

Mirda - The Genome Correctors project, one of the many applications of genetics research, did not provide the big breakthrough many have hoped for. Galith Markos, lead researcher on the Genome Correctors project and founder of the Galith Institute for Hemet Genetics, comments:

"In science one never knows how things might turn out. Instead of making a big deal about the lack of increase in strong hemets, we should be glad that we have helped increase the quality of life for roughly 0.7% of our population. I'm sure that many mothers on Mirda are glad this projected allowed their babies to receive care, and through this help live on to carry the family name."

The throne has no comments on the apparent failure of the research project. However, sources inside the Imperial palace report hearing a strong argument coming from one of the conference rooms at the time Galith Markos was present. It appears that not everyone agrees that the tax-payers' money was well-spent on the project.

Imperial Council in recess

Mirda - The Emperor has declared the Imperial Council in recess until such time that house Iaat appoints a new representative. While it is unclear what perspired in the council chambers, most rumours agree that the Iaat representative behaved in a most uncivilized manner and was only calmed down after being physically subdued by empress Saret Neferti.

Sources inside the palace suggest that the incident is related to an ongoing collaborative research project between the Commonwealth and the Sundarian Federation.

We will keep you up to date as more information on this reaches us.

Sacriledge divides Holy Heimgolian Theocracy

Heimgol - For the first time in almost a century, a citizen of the Holy Heimgolian Theocracy was arrested for Sacrilege, causing large debates about whether the law needs to be updated.

The incident, caught on security tapes, took place in one of the Holy Cathedrals, where an apparently drunk Quarren climbed over a cast-iron gate while escaping the gaze of the ceremonial guard. He then proceeded to open a sanctified cabinet containing what the Theocracy believes to be the horn of one of their deities, which in turn raised alarms across the cathedral.

According to official sources, the Quarren then proceeded to put the horn to his mouth, attempting to drink from it and after failing that proceeded to flee from the guards, while still carrying the horn. When cornered, he used an ink-cloud, a Quarren ability to spit out large quantities of black liquid as a form of defence, which soaked both the ceremonial guard and the holy relic in inky black-saliva. He was captured moments later.

The prosecutor stated experts are currently attempting to clean the horn without causing further damage, though the holy relic may be forever stained black. He additionally stated that the prosecution takes this to be a very serious matter - officially classified as a Mortal Sin, the Quarren could face up to forty years of jail time for this act.

Many Heimgolian citizens are not as religious as their theocratic government would suggest. Several politicians have already called for leniency as they "do not feel that forty years imprisonment is proportional for what was likely an act of drunken foolishness in which nobody was injured.". They additionally mentioned that if the Quarren had murdered one of the ceremonial guards, the punishment would only have been thirty years imprisonment.

Others in the system however are outraged at the crime against the Gods, and certain groups have even called for a public decapitation, which was the official penalty for sacrilege before the Holy Heimgolian Theocracy abolished the death penalty.

The issue leaves the people of the Holy Heimgolian Theocracy to be deeply divided and the trial will most likely be a lengthy and complicated one.

House Iaat declares new patriarch

Mirda - House Iaat has announced that it has seen wisdom in the Emperor's suggestion to appoint a new representative to the Imperial Council. The noble house has declared that it will continue under the guidance of Iaat Sokaru. Iaat Sokaru, a hemet from the northern regions, has appointed his wife as representative.

The council session continued the moment the Iaat representative arrived at the Imperial Palace. The recess lasted a month and six days, during which the house representatives were not legally allowed to leave the Imperial Palace, as the council was not adjourned.

Sources close to the throne suggest that the previous Iaat representative was deliberately provoked to physical violence: "It suits the Emperor's agenda to have council in recess during the Chancellor's vote. This was the only way the houses could not interfere with the Commonwealth's support of Chancellor Acehtoo.", our source quickly amended her statement: "Don't get me wrong, the Emperor would not instigate such behaviour, but someone close to him might've taken it upon themselves to further his agenda."

Hutt break into sector 17 -9

Sector 17 -9 - A Hutt Families Armada today broke the lines of a Slave Rebellion fleet patrolling the shifting border between the two superpowers, forcing the rebels into what some observers have called an uncontrolled rout and allowing the Hutt Armada to enter into Sector 17 -9, a sector secured by the slave rebellion less than three years ago.

Hutt officials report having surrounded the forest world of Echtronista and claim to have engaged local insurgents. Slave Rebellion sources counter that these 'engagements' mainly consist of bombardments from space on civilian area's, additionally stating that an estimated thirty million have already lost their lives in the fires resulting from the bombardments, a number they claim is likely to rise if the Hutt continue targeting civilians with impunity.

Whatever the exact truth is, it is clear that the Hutt have started a new offensive and that the early signs are not positive for the Slave Rebellion.

The Teprogrenaian Consensus announce the Great Intergalactic Discussion of Life

Dhiahamara
- The Teprogrenaian Consensus has agreed to host the intergalactic discussion of life on their home planet Dhiahamara. At first the question was whether the home planet would be a wise choice for this discussion, as a great part of the population would be seen by some factions as ‘unworthy for the holiness of life’ or ‘not suitable for living.’

After consideration the conclusion was that this where not the general motivations from the members of the union and beyond. And therefore it has been agreed that a discussion will help in ‘a better understanding of each other.’

The home planet was chosen for several reasons. Not only is a complex on Dhiahamara much better defendable against terrorist attacks and other inconvenient disturbances. The climate on the home planet is much more hospital then some of the other possible planets suitable for the meeting. And finally there might be some people who find it offensive to be invited to any world smaller than the home planet, but this is only a bonus coming with the choice of the location.

The question now is what to do with the Cradle, currently in orbit around Dhiahamara. Some think it an act of offence and unnecessary intimidation to force the members of the discussion so close to the station. While others think it is a disposal of great responsibility and caring to let such a mighty ship guard the members of the meeting. Some even believed it even to be necessary to show the Cradle so every member of the Union can see that, although we are only but a protectorate, the Teprogrenaian are certainly not weak.

The Consensus only has a small time to decide as the discussion is within two weeks. Chances that the consensus is unable to reach a decision are slim as this has only happen a few times in our history and only with unimportant issues.

Jedi padawan Fecta Trigiel is asked whether he will participate in the discussions. He answered: “It is not my place to talk about life. And I am too busy with my training to become a full and worthy Jedi.” He also didn’t knew if there were any Jedi masters who were thinking about joining the discussion. Although the discussion of life is supposed to be a suitable discussion for the order, till now there are no known Jedi masters who agreed to join the meeting. Although Fecta Trigiel was unwilling to ask the Jedi Masters himself to come to the meeting, he was willing to give some information about the best way to contact some of the masters. Unfortunately we were yet unable to ask any of the masters for a comment.
