Jedi Training in relationship to age

:!: This page is merely my personal view. It is not meant to be authoritative.

I describe the skills I believe Jedi have based on their age. Individuals may vary and race has a major impact on what age is related to what age category (or even if they apply at all). Ages and phases are based on regular humans.

Baby (0-2 years old)

Babies are not done enough to have any significant worldly influence. They are not generally accepted as Jedi and it is usually very difficult to identify a Force sensitive baby from a regular one. Basic skills acquired during this age period:

Infant (2-4 years old)

Some parents test their children (or have them tested by the Jedi) for Force sensitivity. Without a test, a child is unlikely to be recognised as Force sensitive.

Those tested positively might join the Jedi order, but usually at this age they are still too young to get anything resembling serious training. As such, infant Jedi may play with toys developed for creating hand-eye coordination and basic language ability, but nothing outside the range of normal child rearing.

Basic skills acquired during this age period:

Child (4-9 years old)

At this age the childs connection to the Force becomes obvious, up to and including (accidental) use of various simple Force powers. Often these children have other remarkable abilities such as a high intelligence that is easy to pick up on. Jedi usually join the order during this stage of their development.

Basic skills acquired during this age period:

As part of Jedi training, they additionally learn:

Child Jedi do not go on missions, but may go on field trips under the watchful eyes of adults.

Tweener (9-13 years old)

This age is generally too late to start Jedi Training as a child not following the program will lag too far behind to keep up with those of their age who have been receiving training for the past years. They may still be trained as Jedi if a Master picks them up as a personal charge, but being behind they need a lot of intense guidance to catch up. Those who are not picked up by the Jedi often get picked up by non-Jedi groups who have experience with Force Sensitives to help them deal with their unique challenges.

Basic skills acquired during this age period:

As part of Jedi training, they additionally learn

Tweener Jedi will get specific training in skills they have aptitude for, which for one may be pod-racing, for another may be computer use and for a third may be acrobatics. The Jedi may be ahead of their peers in these skills.

Tweener Jedi may be sent to carry out tasks on their own, possibly related to their specific skills, but as a general rule are secretly watched to see how they act and to ensure their safety. Those watching them may interfere in case of problems, but they may be allowed to fail or get in trouble as a valuable life lesson.

Adolescent (13-17 years old)

Adolescent Jedi are in a difficult phase of their lives and are rarely accepted into the Jedi order at this age as they are too old to join the other Jedi youth and too young to work as a Padawan learner. Special cases may apply of course, especially if a Master is willing to take them under their wing, but this is rare.

Basic skills acquired during this age period:

As part of Jedi training, they additional learn

Adolescent Jedi are considdered old enough to go on (minor) missions with other Jedi.

Young Adult (17-21 years old)

Young Adult Jedi are completing their training and are considdered physically and mentally old enough to cover some of the more serious matter that Jedi must know. From this age onwards, a force sensitive not trained by the Jedi may also join the order, in which case their training would focus on learning their missing knowledge of Jedi teachings first and foremost.

Basic skills acquired during this age period:

As part of Jedi training, they additionally learn

Young Adult Jedi are expected to be able to handle missions on their own, provided they are not too extreme.
