The Union Military is by far the largest branch of the Union political organisation. It's mission is the protection of claimed Union territory and its Member worlds. To ward off possible criminal, internal and external threats. The Union maintains patrols and scouting vessels along the Bozzy Spine to offer full scanning on the while Bozzy Spine. All member worlds's home sectors are continuously scanned as well.
The Union Military answers to the Senate, and deploying one or more Union defence fleets requires a successful Senate vote. Its executive arm is uniquely independent, as fleet commanders and ship crews have to pledge their loyalty to the Union, not to their respective faction. The Union has an active programme to mix the crews of their vessels according to race and nationality, but these efforts have met with mixed success. Non-humanoid species in particular tend to have cultural and life-support needs that prevent other races from joining them on the same ship.

The Union has organised its collective military efforts into 8 defence fleets each capable of independent operations. Due to their self-sustaining role as a unit with a range of combat vessels and suitable combat support ships, which can be divided into various organic combinations, these fleets are in turn organised into three so-called Fleet Groups which each have responsibility for a particular area of space.
All three groups are responsible for piracy patrol in times of peace, patrolling the length of the Bozzy Spine, and cooperating with member governments to patrol sovereign territory.
The Union Defence Forces are split into three groups:
Coreware Fleet Group (CORE): the Great Coreward Fleet Group was commissioned by the Union early in its existence, with the purpose of warding off Mandalorian raids. It is composed of 3 fleets, two of which are positioned along the
Bozzy Spine.
Rimward Fleet Group (RIM): the Great Rimward Fleet Group's primary purpose is defence of the core worlds of the Union from
Hutt Slave Raids.
Union Reserve Fleet Group (RES): the Union Reserve Fleet Group is the smallest group, composed of only two fleets. Operating from the Spine, it is capable of rapidly moving coreward in either direction.
The Union Fleets were renamed for its Chancellors after a vote in the senate. As per the vote, UDF-RIM-7 will be named after the next chancellor and UDF-RES-9 after the one after that.
