Cherich is a planet in the mid-rim. It was the homeworld of the now extinct Cherichians and most noted for the QTID Virus Incident. The planet features large plains of green glass and extreme radioactivity. It is quarantined by automated defences and all travel to and from the planet is forbidden. Violators of the quarantine zone are shot on sight.
The QTID Virus Incident was an accident on the planet Cherich during the Times of Chaos. As part of the biological arms race, the Cherichians developed an Exotic-Class bio-weapon. Originally called the ID virus or Immune-system Disruptor Virus, the virus affected species with various variations of white blood cells, including many sentient and non-sentient species. It was a very deadly virus, but since it could spread only through the exchange of bone matter, extremely limited in its spread and application as a weapon.
By adding specific Strange Matter bosons 1) to the virus' genetic materials, the virus became capable of Quantum Teleportation. Now named the Quantum Teleporting Immune-system Disruptor Virus, the scientists that had developed it quickly realised that it was impossible to contain a virus that could move to other locations without travelling through the space in between.
The virus swiftly spread all over Cherich by literally teleporting from one victim to the next. All biological life more complex than a mollusc, including the entire three billion sentient population and all but a hand full of the Cherichian species were wiped out by the virus in a matter of days.
Though the virus could not survive in space, it was universally deemed to be too dangerous to exist and the entire planet was carpet nuked from orbit and quarantined. Though the entire planet now has few features beyond high radiation and large plains of green glass, the quarantine is still in effect, enforced by automated defences surrounding the planet.
